- WHAT IS AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY?
An argumentative essay is a factual composition in which candidates are expected to discuss a controversial issue by presenting arguments for and against a particular position or opinion. The purpose is to convince the reader to accept or seriously consider the writer’s point of view. An argumentative essay usually presents a question or statement that can be debated upon.
Some examples of argumentative topics
- “Money is the route to all evil. Do you agree?”
- “The Internet is the cause of today’s problems. Discuss.”
- “School uniforms should be abolished. Do you agree?”
- “Students should not be allowed to use mobile phones in school. Discuss.”
Note: An argumentative essay is not simply a collection of personal opinions. The candidate’s arguments should be supported with relevant explanations, examples or facts.
