Abiotic Factors in an Ecosystem

This are non-living factors eg Sunlight, temperature which affects the lives of living organism in an Ecosystem

1. Light
Effects on plants
• Increases photosynthesis.
• Promotes chlorophyll formation.
• Opens stomata.

• It Increases the rate of transpiration resulting to wilting

Effects on animals
• For Vision.
• To search for food.
• It enable animals from Escaping predators.
• Low light causes etiolation, where plants become pale and weak.

2. Temperature
High temperature
On Plants
• Increased transpiration
• It causes Wilting

On Animals
• It increase the rate of Sweating
• It causes disease Eg Heat stroke
• Enzyme denaturation

Low temperature
On Plants
• Reduced photosynthesis
• Slow growth

On Animals
• It causes Shivering
• It causes disease Eg Hypothermia
• Optimum temperature promotes growth and reproduction.
