By Location

  • Exteroceptor: detects external stimuli (e.g. skin receptors).
  • Interoceptor: detects internal stimuli (e.g. blood pressure receptors).
  • Proprioceptor: detects position/movement of body parts (e.g. in muscles).

By Stimulus Type

  • Chemoreceptor (taste/smell); Osmoreceptor (solute concentration); Nociceptor (pain); Mechanoreceptor (pressure, sound, balance); Thermoreceptor (heat/cold); Photoreceptor (light).
