What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
  • 1. Explain why plants rely on chemical (hormonal) coordination rather than a nervous system.
  • 2. Name the five major plant growth substances and state at least two functions of each.
  • 3. Distinguish between synergism and antagonism among plant hormones, with examples.
  • 4. Define tropism, nastic movement and tactic movement, and distinguish between them.
  • 5. Identify and describe the five types of tropism, stating whether shoots/roots are positively or negatively affected.
  • 6. Explain, using the auxin distribution model, how shoots bend towards light and roots bend towards gravity.
  • 7. Describe simple experiments that demonstrate phototropism and geotropism, including their controls.
  • 8. Explain photoperiodism and classify plants as long-day, short-day or day-neutral.
  • 9. Define vernalization and explain its importance in flowering.
