- Electric Shock
- Shock (medical term): a sudden fall in blood pressure — it can result from excessive bleeding and can be fatal. A first aider can reduce the bleeding and rush the victim to hospital.
- In an electrocution (electric shock), the victim loses consciousness.
Safety First
- Do NOT touch the victim unless you are sure they are no longer in contact with the electric source or supply — otherwise you can become the next victim.
- First switch off the source of electricity.
Treatment
- Resuscitate the victim to consciousness, then treat any burns.
- If shock results from a burn, pour cold water on the area for about 10 minutes.
- Cover the area with a clean, dry cloth. Do not apply any ointment.
- Take the victim to the hospital.
