1. Choosing a Site for a House

Soil Type

Suitability

Clay soil

Holds water; damp — good breeding ground for mosquitoes

Sandy soil

Does not hold water; loose particles — cannot support a house

Loam soil

Best for construction — holds a little water, keeps the house dry, gives solid support

  • Avoid areas liable to landslides and flooding.
  • Avoid swamps (wetlands) — must be reclaimed first; they also breed mosquitoes.
  • Avoid building close to huge trees (too much shade, block air circulation, dangerous in high winds).
  • The site should be high, airy, well-drained and dry.
  • Avoid industrial zones (noise, gas, smog, waste pollution) and avoid overcrowded areas — leave room for gardens.
  • Avoid disease-prevalent zones; choose a site near water supply, roads, schools, fuel sources, hospitals and other social amenities.
