- Preventing Over-Heating in a House
- A wide veranda (eaves) provides shade for relaxation and children’s play, and stops rain from splashing/damping the walls.
- Cross ventilation: doors/windows placed on opposite sides let fresh air in on one side and push stagnant hot air out the other.
- In hot areas, paint walls white to reflect light/heat; fit a canopy over windows to block direct sun and rain.
- Cavity (double) walls trap an air space between an inner and outer wall, which insulates against the sun’s heat.
- A concrete box built over each window blocks the sun’s rays from most directions and keeps out rain.
- Provide air vents in the ceiling so rising hot air can escape.
