Chapter 1: Summary, Major Themes and Characterization in The Crown of Thorns
This chapter sets the stage for a tragic conflict between traditional Nkokonoko Small Monje customs and the creeping influence of westernization and greed. Chief Nchindia, the newly crowned leader, begins the chapter holding his Council of Elders in total contempt and inwardly vowing to defy them at every opportunity. The situation quickly escalates into a crisis when it is discovered that the statue of the village's supreme god (Akeukeuor) has been stolen and sold to a white man. This desecration is an unforgivable offense, and traditional law dictates the immediate execution of the culprits. The narrative then plunges into suspense as the community questions whether their newly crowned Chief is secretly involved in the theft.
