Tips for success at the TOEFL Listening Text
To succeed, candidates can do the following:
- listen for the main idea before focusing on small details.
- pay attention to changes in the speaker’s topic or direction.
- listen for signal words because they often reveal relationships between ideas.
- take brief notes rather than attempting to write every word.
- distinguish what the speaker says directly from what can reasonably be inferred.
- eliminate answer choices that are true statements but do not answer the question asked.
- attentive even when the topic is unfamiliar because TOEFL questions test listening ability rather than specialist knowledge.
- use the speaker’s tone, emphasis and choice of words when answering attitude and purpose questions.
