In this scene, Shakespeare portrays the witches as supernatural beings. Their supernatural nature in the text is evident as they prophesy and recount things that will happen in the future. When Macbeth and Banquo appear on the scene, the witches greet Macbeth with three different titles. They begin with his actual position, followed by two positions he has yet to hold, one of which comes to pass before the end of the scene. This makes the reader question how they managed to know what was to happen, thereby proving that they are supernatural.

The witches are equally mysterious as they appear, speak of their mischievous deeds, and then wait for Macbeth. From their appearance, as described by Macbeth and Banquo, they are mysterious, for they look out of the ordinary. The witches are also mysterious as they stir the curiosity of Macbeth and Banquo and then vanish into thin air without explaining how things are to happen.
