In Act 1, Scene 3 of Macbeth, Shakespeare presents the Weird Sisters (three witches), who talk about their evil deeds while waiting for Macbeth. When Macbeth and Banquo enter, the witches prophesy to them, saying that Macbeth will be named the Thane of Cawdor and will also become king. As for Banquo, the witches prophesy that his children will be kings, and before Macbeth could question them about their prophecy, they disappear. Just as the witches disappear, Macbeth is proclaimed the Thane of Cawdor, which prompts him to ask more questions. This scene is significant because it introduces the eponymous character, or the title character, of the play, Macbeth, and also introduces the internal conflict that shapes the rest of the play.
