War: the war between the Scottish army and the Norwegian army is interpreted by the Captain. From the description, the reader can understand how war brings bloodshed and calamities as is the case of the battlefield. Shakespeare equally paints this theme to depict Macbeth’s bravery and a heroic soldier.

Bravery and Heroism: this theme is depicted in how Macbeth fights the Norwegian and army and the manner at which he kills the rebel. From the narrative of the wounded sergeant, Macbeth is celebrated as Scotland’s greatest soldier. His courage in battle earns him honour and reward.

Loyalty versus Betrayal: The contrast between Macbeth’s loyalty to his country as he fights for his country and the Thane of Cawdor’s treason who makes allies with Norway is central to the scene. Duncan rewards Macbeth’s loyalty by naming him thane of Cawdor and punishes the traitor.
