Here the – + – rule has been fully applied to achieve the below responses from the statements and tag questions identified above

1) Yes they were

2)No she hasn’t

3) yes it was

4 yes he does

5) yes they have

In a nut shell, these are just grammatical rules that should be applied when dealing with tag questions however if you are faced with a situation whereby you are been accused falsely you wouldn’t have to stick to these rules for it will land you into problems.

For example:

You were at the laboratory when the apparatus got broken. Weren’t you?

Your answer would be No I wasn’t since you are being sincere. If you respond yes I was there following the +   –    +  rule, it will only complicate things for you.

Except you were there at that time then the rules remain a guiding principle for accurate dialogue should this question type be applied during a conversation.
