CHARACTERIZATION IN CHAPTER 6
Chapter 6 is the confrontation between Ngobefuo and Achiebefuo after the theft of the Akeukeuor (the god of Nkokonoko Small Monje).
Achiebefuo – The Accused Carver
Defensive & Hurt: Feels betrayed that his friend of 50 years suspects him of stealing the god.
Eloquent & Intelligent: Uses long, emotional speech and rhetorical questions to defend himself – “What kind of man did you say you know me to be?”
Loyal & Trustworthy: Reminds Ngobefuo that the tribe rests on their two shoulders as chosen by Fuo-Ndee.
Moral & Upright: Says he could not even dream of such sacrilege, sees it as an insult to Fuo-Ndee and the god who chose him.
Proud: Proud of his identity as a carver, not a thief.
Ngobefuo – The First Man / Leader
Wise & Calm: Does not shout, listens and observes Achiebefuo with a “quizzical look”.
Diplomatic but Suspicious: He is the one who calls Achiebefuo to defend himself, shows he suspects him.
Firm & Just: His final judgment is simple and firm: “A carver. I know Achiebefuo to be a good carver.” – still believes in him despite pressure.
