EDITING A REPORT

A report is based on issues, events or incidents that have actually taken place. The reporter must have witnessed or heard about the event.

A report can take the form of a formal letter or a newspaper article. When a report is written as a newspaper article, the following must be taken into consideration:

  • It should have a captivating title.
  • It should provide an interesting introduction that indicates what, where, when, why and how the event took place.
  • It should be written in reported speech and in the third-person point of view.
  • Since it is an event that took place in the past, the main tense to be used is the past tense.
  • A report should have a conclusion in which a writer expresses his/her opinion or provides a possible solution to the problem.
