Undertones of the Cameroonian Cultural Landscape in the Play
One of the strengths of And Palm-Wine Will Flow is its use of elements drawn from African and Cameroonian traditional life. While studying the play, close attention should be paid on the following:
- the Fon,
- the council of elders,
- the chief priest,
- red-feather traditions,
- palm wine,
- Libation,
- Incantation,
- Masks,
- sacred groves,
- ancestors and gods,
- traditional ceremonies,
- communal gatherings,
- agricultural land.
These elements help make the play distinctly African while also enabling Butake to discuss universal issues such as power, justice, leadership and resistance.
