Bravery and Resilience
The outstanding strength of Emade, the protagonist of The Lady with a Beard, strongly depicts the theme of bravery and resilience. Emade demonstrates bravery and resilience on several occasions throughout the novel. For instance, she single-handedly digs a grave, arranges stones around Méchane’s grave, and plays the traditional drum remarkably well, despite the fact that these activities are traditionally reserved for men.
Emade also demonstrates resilience as she confronts the uncertainties surrounding her daughter, Ntube, while enduring the pointing fingers and wagging tongues of the women of Atieg. Despite the criticism and rejection she faces, she remains determined to act according to her convictions. Her courage and unconventional behaviour eventually earn her the nickname “The Lady with a Beard.”
