III. Characterization and Character traits.

 Walter Lee Younger

This act reveals Walter’s increasing frustration and desperation. He wants to become financially independent at all cost and believes that money will give him dignity and control over his life. However, his fascination with the business causes him to overlook the concerns of other members of the family. His decision at the end of the act is important because he begins to understand that family dignity is more important than financial gain.

 

Mama

Mama remains the moral center of the family. Her purchase of the house demonstrates her determination to provide a better future for her children and grandchildren. She also continues to believe in Walter despite his mistakes. Her decision to entrust him with the remaining money shows her hope that he can become a responsible man.

 

Beneatha

Beneatha’s interest in African culture becomes stronger in this act. Her relationship with Asagai exposes her to questions of African identity, heritage and cultural pride. Her conflict with George also reveals her desire to be intellectually independent rather than to simply conform to the conventional expectations of her society.

 

Ruth

Ruth is relieved by the prospect of moving into a better home. The new house represents hope and stability for her family. She continues to support Walter while also recognizing the practical difficulties faced by the family.

 

Asagai

Asagai is an embodiment of African identity and cultural consciousness. Through his relationship with Beneatha, the playwright introduces questions about African heritage and the importance of understanding one’s cultural roots.

 

Karl Lindner

Lindner represents institutionalized racial prejudice. Although he does not openly threaten the Youngers. In a seemingly polite and apparently reasonable language, he persuades them not to move into Clybourne Park. This makes his character particularly significant because the play shows that racism can operate even through apparently respectable social institutions and polite behavior.
