What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
  • 1. Define cellular respiration and describe the structure of the mitochondrion and its adaptations.
  • 2. Describe the structure, properties and functions of ATP.
  • 3. Outline the four stages of aerobic respiration and where each occurs in the cell.
  • 4. Describe glycolysis and state its net ATP, NADH₂ and pyruvate yield.
  • 5. Describe the transition (link) reaction and the Krebs cycle, with their products.
  • 6. Explain the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation, and calculate total ATP yield.
  • 7. Compare oxidative phosphorylation with photophosphorylation.
  • 8. Describe anaerobic respiration (fermentation) in plants/yeast and in animals.
  • 9. Compare aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
  • 10. Define and calculate the respiratory quotient (RQ) and explain its significance.
  • 11. Define basal metabolic rate (BMR) and state the factors affecting it.
  • 12. Explain oxygen debt, recovery oxygen, myoglobin and creatine phosphate in relation to exercise.
