COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES (Degrees)

a) Positive Degree: No comparison. John is

b) Comparative Degree: Compares two persons/things. John is taller than Peter.

c) Superlative Degree: Compares more than two. John is the tallest in the class.

Rules:

  1. Short adjectives: add -er, -est: tall – taller – tallest, small – smaller – smallest.
  2. Adjectives ending in -y: change y to i and add -er, -est: happy – happier – happiest.
  3. Long adjectives of about 3 syllables: use more / most: beautiful – more beautiful – most beautiful.
  4. Irregular adjectives: good – better – best, bad – worse – worst, much/many – more – most.
