What Will You Learn?

  • By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
  • 1. Define respiration, gaseous exchange, respiratory surface and respiratory medium.
  • 2. State the properties of a good respiratory surface and list respiratory surfaces in different organisms.
  • 3. Explain why multicellular organisms need specialized respiratory surfaces, and compare air and water as respiratory media.
  • 4. Name the common respiratory pigments and the organisms in which each is found.
  • 5. Describe gaseous exchange in unicellular organisms and insects (tracheal system).
  • 6. Describe the structure of fish gills and explain the counter-current flow mechanism, contrasting it with the parallel flow in cartilaginous fish.
  • 7. Describe the structure of the mammalian gaseous exchange system, from nose to alveoli.
  • 8. Describe the structure and adaptations of the alveolus for gaseous exchange.
  • 9. Explain the mechanism of inspiration and expiration (ventilation) in mammals.
  • 10. Explain nervous and chemical control of breathing rate.
  • 11. Define and calculate the various lung volumes and capacities.
  • 12. Describe gaseous exchange in plants through the stomata.
