- Gaseous Exchange in Plants
- Occurs at the stomata — pores surrounded by bean-shaped, chloroplast-containing guard cells. Light activates ATPase, pumping K⁺ into guard cells; malate also accumulates, raising osmotic pressure so water enters, the cells become turgid, and the pore opens. O₂ and CO₂ then diffuse in/out as needed.
